Lexi and Diego, a couple seeking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life in Austin, Texas, have embarked on an inspiring journey to build their dream home using shipping containers. They purchased 12-and-a-half acres of land in a rural area near Austin for $180,000, envisioning a peaceful retreat away from the crowded urban environment.
Initially, the couple planned to develop their land into an "exotic tiny Airbnb ranch." However, they encountered challenges in obtaining the necessary permits. Instead of abandoning their dreams, they pivoted to constructing a tiny home from shipping containers. They acquired two 40-foot shipping containers for $5,500 each, which were delivered to their property in November 2023.
Diego has taken on the majority of the construction work himself, showcasing his determination and skill. While they work on their container home, Lexi and Diego currently reside in a renovated RV that they bought for $4,000 through Facebook Marketplace. This temporary living situation has not dampened their spirits; rather, it has fueled their motivation to complete their project.
The design of their container home spans 640 square feet and includes one bedroom and a bathroom. As Lexi explains, “The living area and kitchen is all underneath. Then we have a bedroom, master bath and office. The bedroom wakes up to the sunrise and from the bath you can see the sunset.” The couple has faced several challenges during the construction process. They installed plumbing and electrical systems themselves, including running electricity approximately 300 feet to the home.
With hopes of finishing the project within a month, Lexi and Diego are eager to move in once the drywall is up and they can begin decorating their new space. “We want to give people inspiration for different projects you can do,” Lexi stated, emphasizing their desire to motivate others to explore creative living solutions.
In addition to completing their home, the couple has laid plans for their future homestead. They have already purchased chickens and two cows, further solidifying their commitment to rural living. Reflecting on their new lifestyle, Lexi expressed her satisfaction: “We love it. We’re living on 12-and-a-half acres and I love it — It’s like our own little city.”
