Donut Delight: Mr. D’s Sweet Tribute to Patrick Mahomes

Mr. D's Donut Shop in Kansas City has once again captured the spotlight with its creative tribute to the Super Bowl hero Patrick Mahomes. The shop has crafted a unique batch of six Chiefs-themed donuts, retailing at $2.50 each, just in time for the big game. These delectable treats are designed to resemble Mahomes' head, featuring maple icing for the face, chocolate icing on top, and chocolate sprinkles. Alongside these, the donuts are adorned with the team's iconic arrowhead logo and mini jerseys made from vanilla fondant.

The tradition of crafting Chiefs-themed donuts began in 2021 when the Kansas City Chiefs made the playoffs. The idea of designing a donut in Patrick Mahomes' image quickly became a fan favorite. "They all look at it and they’re like, ‘Oh my God! It looks just like Patrick Mahomes!'" said Johnny Chen, the owner of Mr. D's Donut Shop.

This year, Mr. D's Donut Shop attempted to team up with Federal Donuts in Philadelphia for a collaborative Super Bowl treat but did not receive a response. Despite this, the shop remains committed to its charitable efforts. In past years, they have supported organizations such as the 15 and the Mahomies Foundation. This Super Bowl season, 15% of their proceeds will benefit the Steps of Faith Foundation, which provides prosthetics to amputees.

Anticipation is high with around 150 pre-orders for the Chiefs' dozen donut boxes ahead of the Super Bowl. In keeping with their unique traditions, Mr. D's also burns the opposing team's logo atop their s'mores donuts in the week leading to the game. This fiery custom is part of two televised ceremonies each year before the AFC Championship and Super Bowl, where Chen lights the opponent's donut on fire, and a customer stomps on it. "The most recent one obviously is Burnt Bills and we post online how we torch them and light them on fire," he explained.

Chen also hosts charity challenges with donut shops in opposing teams' cities since the 2022 playoffs. The losing shop must donate to charity and send over donuts. "Obviously at the time it was, and still is right now, Patrick Mahomes," noted Chen about their inspiration.
