The OK9 Wellbeing and Trauma Support Dog Network is extending a paw of comfort to police staff across the nation. With over 150 wellbeing dogs, including the charming Teyha, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, the program aims to alleviate stress and burnouts among officers. On Thursday, Teyha made her debut at Melksham Police Station, providing a much-needed respite for those who confront trauma daily.
Each OK9 dog is rigorously tested for suitability, ensuring they can provide effective support. Their handlers, all volunteers within the police force, undergo peer support training to maximize the impact of these canine companions. Mark Hargreaves, Teyha's handler and an ex-military professional, underscores the importance of welfare and mental health in such demanding roles.
"It's a great opportunity to give something back." – Mr Hargreaves
Hargreaves described Teyha as "really well behaved and enjoyed it," reflecting the positive reception among police staff. The OK9 dogs are part of a national initiative designed to engage with officers and staff facing high-pressure situations.
"The dogs really are that secret weapon that engage with staff and let us talk to them and tell them where we can support," – Iain Pettitt
Wellbeing manager Iain Pettitt emphasized the unique role these dogs play in offering "light relief" and facilitating conversations about available support.
"Stress, burnouts – it's all things that police officers and staff have to deal with." – Iain Pettitt
He highlighted the critical need for these interactions, noting that police personnel frequently encounter traumatic incidents far exceeding the average person's experience.
"The average person will experience between five and seven traumatic incidents in their life, police officers and staff can experience up to 700," – Det Insp Steve Edwards
Detective Inspector Steve Edwards also praised the initiative, recognizing the happiness and smiles the dogs bring to the teams they visit.
"Everyone loves dogs. It's really nice to see the teams happy and smiling." – Det Insp Steve Edwards
The program not only provides emotional support but also strengthens the bonds within teams, enhancing overall morale. The presence of OK9 dogs like Teyha offers a moment of joy amidst the challenging realities faced by those in law enforcement.
