North Northamptonshire’s Ambitious Strategy to Combat Inactivity

North Northamptonshire Council has unveiled a comprehensive action plan aimed at addressing high inactivity levels among adults and children within the region. This initiative follows a Sport England Active Lives survey conducted in 2020-21, which highlighted the area's significantly higher rates of inactivity compared to national averages. Rural communities and areas experiencing high deprivation emerged as the most vulnerable groups, prompting the council to develop targeted interventions.

The plan includes extensive upgrades to local sports facilities, starting with Kettering Swimming Pool. The pool will see the replacement of its lanes and the addition of a new fitness studio space. Furthermore, improvements are slated for community spaces at Lodge Park Sports Centre in Corby and Redwell Leisure Centre in Wellingborough. Desborough Leisure Centre will benefit from a new sports hall floor, funded by S106 contributions.

Fitness and gym amenities are also set for enhancement, with developments planned at Corby International Pool and Lodge Park Sports Centre. In addition to these upgrades, a feasibility study will explore the condition of tennis courts at Swanspool Gardens in Wellingborough, potentially leading to their reopening. The council is also investigating sites for outdoor table tennis tables and exploring ways to develop council-owned fisheries.

"One of the key drivers is to improve the health and wellbeing of residents by planning for the appropriate facilities to meet the needs of the increasing population." – North Northamptonshire Council

The council's strategy not only addresses current inactivity levels but also anticipates future needs as the population grows. By investing in diverse recreational opportunities, the council aims to foster a healthier community and promote active lifestyles. These efforts reflect a commitment to enhancing residents' quality of life across North Northamptonshire.
