Late-night venues worldwide have adopted a novel tactic to address noise complaints from neighbors. Though not yet mainstream in New York City, renowned as America's top party hub, the strategy has sparked interest due to the city's thriving nightlife scene. A nightclub operator from northern England devised this plan over two decades ago, successfully reducing noise levels by giving patrons something simple: sweets.

David Nejrup, the operations director at Carousel and Home in Leeds, pioneered this approach. By offering treats to patrons, Nejrup discovered that individuals tend to quiet down with something in their mouths. He explained,

“As daft as it sounds, people tend to become quiet when they have something in their mouth,” – David Nejrup

This strategy was tested over 20 years ago in a British city, where local authorities supported the initiative. The police funded 13,000 treats to be distributed during a trial period, successfully maintaining peace with noise-sensitive neighbors. The nightspot had recently received approval to extend its alcohol serving hours, which heightened residents' concerns about potential disturbances.

In New York City, a different kind of sweet attraction is drawing crowds. BonBon, a Swedish confectionery located on the Lower East Side, has emerged as an unexpected nightlife destination. Open until midnight, it has become a favored spot for late-night revelers seeking an alternative to traditional bars. Katie Miller, a 23-year-old patron, described her experience,
