Beth Buckingham, a 30-year-old social media influencer, has ignited a lively debate on TikTok with her recent post about a corporate outfit choice. Accumulating over one million views, Buckingham shared an old clip featuring her in a white mini-skirt—an ensemble she now regrets wearing to a corporate job. The video has divided opinions across the internet, as viewers weigh in on the appropriateness of her attire.
Buckingham, who describes herself as "just a girl trying to dress for work in summer," explained that the outfit was problematic, particularly for tall individuals. Despite her misgivings, she noted that in Australia, such fashion choices are often not seen as a "big deal," even within corporate settings during the summer months. In an interview with news.com.au, she remarked that one can "get away" with wearing shorter skirts at work.
The TikTok post features Buckingham questioning the length of her skirt and pondering whether it was too short for office wear. She confessed that although she regrets the decision, she has made worse fashion choices before. One notable misstep involved wearing standing jeans to work, which proved uncomfortable after sitting down.
Some of Buckingham's viewers expressed their own experiences and thoughts on the matter. One commenter advised her to "Just go straight to HR when you walk in," while another warned, "Honestly, you will wear it and flash everybody in the office, and you’ll be uncomfortable all day and wish you’d never wore it." Buckingham herself acknowledged the discomfort she felt throughout the day, stating, "But I personally just felt uncomfortable wearing it all day because I was moving around, getting up from my desk, walking around etc. So, I wished I’d changed the second I filmed that first video. Always clarity in hindsight."
While some users empathized with Buckingham's clothing choice, others shared contrasting views. A user mentioned they routinely wore similar skirts but were currently unemployed. Another person identified with Buckingham's situation, admitting they often wear short skirts to work as well. When faced with a comment written in all capitals, Buckingham humorously replied, reminding viewers there was no "need to yell."
