In 2025, the classic pump shoe is making a significant comeback, according to NYC-based trend forecaster Mandy Lee. Once a staple of formal wardrobes, the pump is anticipated to be the "It" shoe of the year, dominating red carpets, runways, and the front rows of fashion shows. This revival marks a departure from the comfort-oriented footwear that gained popularity during the pandemic, such as mesh flats and dad sneakers. Instead, pumps offer a more elegant alternative to sneakers and ballet flats, adding sophistication to both formal and casual attire.
The resurgence of the pump shoe is not only a testament to its timeless appeal but also its versatility across different fashion groups. Lee notes that businesswomen are increasingly opting for pumps despite the recent trend favoring flats. This shift reflects a broader desire for fashion that conveys seriousness and elegance.
“It’s like, ‘I want to be taken seriously,’” said Lee.
After a few years away from the spotlight, the pump shoe has been rebranded with a "cool-girl" image. Celebrities like Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber have embraced this trend, while royals such as Princess Diana and Kate Middleton have long championed the style. The pump's adaptability allows it to be worn in various colors and styles, making it suitable for both traditional and contemporary outfits.
“It’s been a few years since we’ve really seen the pump have its moment, at least in trends,” Lee remarked.
The pump's resurgence follows the rise of kitten heels, another trend that pointed towards a return to more structured footwear. In recent catwalk collections, the pump has made notable appearances, including Tory Burch's spring 2025 show. Burch's "Pierced Pump" style has even been dubbed the "coolest shoe" by Elle magazine, indicating a strong endorsement from the fashion industry.
“Businesswomen — they’re rocking a pump, even though flats have been very popular the last couple of years,” Lee added.
