Kaleo Kanahele Maclay, an esteemed member of the women's sitting volleyball team, has made headlines for her remarkable journey balancing motherhood and athletic excellence. Representing Team USA in three Paralympic Games, Maclay's story is one of resilience and determination. Born with a clubbed left foot, she began her competitive journey in sitting volleyball in 2010. Over the years, she has not only excelled on the court but also embraced the challenges of motherhood, raising her two sons, Duke, aged six, and Kai, who is two.
In the lead-up to the 2020 Paralympic Games, Maclay faced a personal challenge. She was trying for her second child when the games were postponed, forcing her to wait an additional year to expand her family. An ectopic pregnancy added to her trials, yet she remained hopeful and grateful to be pregnant again. As she competed on the world stage during the early months of her first trimester, she took a pregnancy test in her Tokyo hotel room.
"I kind of had a feeling, so I was like, 'I will just bring some pregnancy tests with me and we'll see when we get there when I feel like I can take a breath,'" – Kaleo Kanahele Maclay
Her intuition was right.
"I took [the test] a little bit before I ate breakfast that morning and then came back to the room before practice and saw that I was pregnant," – Kaleo Kanahele Maclay.
Competing at such a high level while pregnant highlighted Maclay's unwavering commitment and passion for the sport. Her experiences have shaped not only her athletic career but also her approach to parenting. She credits the communication skills honed through volleyball for helping her become a better parent to Duke and Kai.
"I'm not only setting an example for other moms, but I'm setting an example for my sons of what women can do while they're pregnant or while they're wanting to have children." – Kaleo Kanahele Maclay
Maclay's story serves as an inspiration to many, showcasing the power of perseverance and the beauty of embracing change.
"For me, just acknowledging that my body will continue to change is powerful and beautiful. I've become stronger because of my two kids." – Kaleo Kanahele Maclay
Her determination extends beyond personal achievements; she hopes to inspire others through her journey, demonstrating strength as both an athlete and a mother. Her gratitude for being able to compete with Kai by her side is palpable.
