28 Days to Better Health: New Programme Offers Hope for Patients

A groundbreaking health initiative in Somerset is transforming the lives of local residents through a focused 28-day metabolic health programme. Launched in August 2024, the scheme has already attracted approximately 150 participants, aiming to combat preventable health issues such as type-2 diabetes and high blood pressure.

Patients enrolled in the programme attend metabolic health coaching sessions every two weeks. These sessions emphasize long-term lifestyle changes that can reverse adverse health conditions. Dr. Campbell Murdoch, the programme's architect, believes that even brief, ten-minute interactions with health coaches can significantly alter patients' health trajectories.

The initiative is a collaborative effort with Swiss Re, targeting a reduction in claims for work-related illnesses. Participants with a high Body Mass Index (BMI) and indications of inflammatory diseases are referred to a peer support group, which meets bi-weekly at the surgery. This group, run by Symphony Healthcare Services, fosters a community environment where individuals can share experiences and strategies for improving their metabolic health.

Dr. Murdoch chose a 28-day framework for the programme because it feels approachable and manageable for patients. He asserts, “Twenty-eight days is 28 days, that's not a lifetime. If you go back to your old ways, the problems are going to return.” The structure allows participants to engage enthusiastically, witness immediate benefits, and then commit to longer-term lifestyle changes.

Basil Duddridge, a participant who joined the programme as a pre-diabetic, has experienced remarkable success. Since starting the course, he has lost two stone and received confirmation that his insulin levels are now normal. Duddridge expressed his astonishment at the results, stating, “I can't believe it, it is amazing. Before I see the results, numbers don't mean a lot to me but seeing the graph I can't believe it really.”

The programme focuses on how well individuals process food—essentially their metabolism—and integrates discussions about nutrition, physical activity, sleep, and stress management. Dr. Murdoch highlights that “metabolic health is very closely linked to what we choose to eat and how we move, as well as sleep and stress levels.”

Feedback from participants indicates that they find the programme enjoyable and supportive. Dr. Murdoch noted, “Reassuringly, people seem to say they enjoy it.” The positive response further reinforces the programme’s goal of fostering sustainable health improvements.

Looking ahead, Dr. Murdoch envisions establishing a dedicated metabolic health hub in Somerset to continue expanding these vital services. This innovative approach not only aids individuals in managing their health but also contributes to the broader goal of reducing the burden of preventable diseases in the community.
